The Indian Economic Service (IES) and The Indian Statistical Service (ISS) are the administrative inter-ministerial civil service. This comes under group A of the Central Civil Services of the Government of India. Popularly referred to as IES/I.E.S and ISS respectively.

 

IES was introduced for formulating and implementing economic policies. The main function of this service is to cater to economic analysis, economic administration, and policy advice. ISS was introduced to provide solutions to the data and information needs and interpretation and analysis of statistics.

 

 

 

IES/ISS Exam

This is an all-India level examination conducted once a year to help the candidate make a career in economic and statistical services.

IES/ISS  Exam Dates

The UPSC generally releases the notifications of the IES/ISS Exam in the month of June. Aspirants willing to appear for IES/ISS can apply online by visiting the official website of UPSC.

Eligibility Criteria

IES

 

1. Nationality

The candidate must be a citizen of India to be eligible for the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) and The Indian Police Service (IPS), and for other services, the candidate must be either of the following :

  • Candidates must be a citizen of India
  • Candidates must be a citizen of Nepal or a subject of Bhutan.
  • Candidates must be Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962, for settling permanently in India.
  • Candidates must a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Burma, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Myanmar, Uganda, Malawi, Tanzania, Vietnam, Zaire with the motive to settle permanently in India.

 

2. Educational Qualification Criteria

Exam Qualification
Indian Economic Services (IES) Candidates must be Post Graduate in Economics/Applied Economics/Econometrics/ Business Economics from a recognized University or foreign University approved by the Central Government of India.
Indian Statistical Service (ISS) Candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree in Statistic/Mathematical Statistic/Applied Statistic as one of the subjects from a recognized University or foreign University approved by the Central Government of India.

OR

Candidate must hold a Master’s degree in Statistic/Mathematical Statistic/Applied from a recognized University or foreign University approved by Central Government of India.

 

3. Age Limit

A candidate should be a minimum of 21 years and a maximum of 30 years to appear for the IES/ISS Examination. The maximum age mentioned above is relaxable for the following candidates :

  1. Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST): 5 years
  2. Other Backward Classes(OBC) : 3 Years
  3. Defence Service Personnel : 3 years
  4. Candidate from the state of Jammu & Kashmir: 5 years
  5. Ex-servicemen and ECOs/SSCOs who have served at least 5 years in Military Service as of 1st of August of the Notification Year: 5 years
  6. Blind, Deaf-mute and physically handicapped person: 10 Years.

 

Exam Pattern

UPSC conducts exams in two-level as mentioned below. The candidate who clears the written test will be called for an Interview.

Stage 2: Viva Voce

Candidates who qualify for the written exam will be called for Viva Voce. The total mark for Viva is 200 marks. Board will take the interview which consists of the competent panelist, who would judge the candidature on the following grounds :

  • Mental Attentiveness
  • Critical power of understanding
  • Clear and Logical Interpretation
  • Balance of Judgement
  • Ability of social solidarity and leadership
  • Intelligent curiosity.
